Catholics are traveling to Gower, Missouri, to witness what they call a miracle: a nun's body with no signs of decay four years after burial.
When the Benedictine Sisters of Mary, Queen of Apostles, exhumed the body of their foundress earlier this month, they discovered the unexpected. Four years after her death and burial in a simple wooden coffin, Sister Wilhemina Lancaster's body appeared remarkably well preserved. The news spread quickly on social media and now hundreds of pilgrims are flocking to the monastery in rural Missouri. Executive Director of EWTN's ACI group, who has been following the story from the beginning, Kelsey Wicks, joins to share more about who Sr. Wilhemina is. Wicks visited the monastery in rural Missouri soon after the body was exhumed. She tells us what the scene was like. Wicks discusses what has been the impact of this story on the community. This community may be well known to some of our viewers because of their recordings. Wicks explains more about that. She fills us in on what other stories she is following. We've just received astonishing news from the Benedictine Sisters of Mary, Queen of the Apostles in Gower, MO. It starts with the rains this spring at the Sisters' cemetery. The rains were excessive and caused an implosion of the 4 year-old burial plot of foundress Mother Mary Wilhelmina. The coffin was cracked...and Mother Abbess peeked in with a flashlight and screamed. The body was mostly intact, including eyebrows and eyelashes. The fabric along the coffin had deteriorated completely but her own habit was in perfect condition. this humble, beautiful bride of Christ died in 2019 at the age of 95. She had been buried alongside the little graves of miscarried children... 🤍 Music: 'Beyond These Walls' [Meditative Cinematic Orchestral CC-BY] - Scott Buckley

#BishopAthanasiusSchneider #ConfraternityOfOurLadyOfFatima #AServantofMary Sister Wilhelmina Lancaster, OSB, of the Most Holy Rosary, founded the Benedictine Sisters of Mary, Queen of the Apostles. Known for her devotion to the Traditional Latin Mass and her faithfulness to Benedictine contemplation and the Liturgy of the Hours, she died at age 95 on May 29, 2019, on the solemnity of the Ascension. “I mean there was just this sense that the Lord was doing this,” she said. “Right now we need hope. We need it. Our Lord knows that. And she was such a testament to hope. And faith. And trust.” The Catholic Church has a long-standing tradition of so-called “incorruptible saints,” more than a hundred of whom have been beatified or canonized. The saints are called incorruptible because years after their death parts of or even the entirety of their bodies are immune to the natural process of decay. Even with modern embalming techniques, bodies are subject to natural processes of decomposition. According to Catholic tradition, incorruptible saints give witness to the truth of the resurrection of the body and the life that is to come. The lack of decay is also seen as a sign of holiness: a life of grace lived so closely to Christ that sin with its corruption does not proceed in typical fashion but is miraculously held at bay. ‘A beautiful sign’ “Not only was her body in a remarkable preserved condition, her crown and bouquet of flowers were dried in place; the profession candle with the ribbon, her crucifix, and rosary were all intact,” the sisters reported. “Even more remarkable was the complete preservation of her holy habit, made from natural fibers, for which she fought so vigorously throughout her religious life. They synthetic veil was perfectly intact, while the lining of the coffin, made of similar material, was completely deteriorated and gone.” Abbess Cecilia stressed that the preservation of the habit is a large part of what she sees as miraculous, because the habit is “a beautiful sign that this life is not all there is.” “People see us and it’s like ‘Oh, she’s a sister, oh she’s wearing that because she’s giving her life, she believes in God. Maybe I should think about God,’” she said, noting that the habit is “a sign of the things to come, of the supernatural and of our last end: heaven, hell, purgatory.” St. Joseph, “Terror of demons,” pray for us. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us. St. John the Baptist, pray for us. St. Michael the Archangel, “Defend us in battle,” pray for us. Angel of God, my holy brother guardian, pray for us. Holy Brother Guardian Angels of all the Aborted until now, pray for us. 🙏🙌🙏 (Credit: Kelsey Wicks/CNA); right: Abbey of Our Lady of Ephesus. (Image: Grapalicious/Wikipedia)
David Clohessy knows the pain of abuse firsthand. He and two of his brothers were molested by their parish priest, growing up outside St. Louis. In a terrible twist, one of his brothers ended up becoming a priest himself, only to later be accused of abusing a child and forced to leave the priesthood. Clohessy has since devoted his life to exposing the church abuse crisis, not only the priests but the institutions that protect them. He is among a group of survivors, including Bellocchio, that are shining a light on what’s happening in Missouri with the Servants of the Paraclete. They are calling on the religious order to become more transparent and change how they handle and treat abuser priests. They have enlisted the help of a Missouri state lawmaker who has introduced legislation to license the facility. And have gotten a state official in New Mexico, where the servants are headquartered, to investigate the nonprofit order. All this comes as attorney generals throughout the U.S. roll out reports that show the church still faces a crisis in how its responds and deals with abuse claims and the priests who stand accused. Should some still be allowed to hide out in Missouri?
Saint Bernadette was born Marie Bernadette Soubirous on January 7, 1844, and her family knew her as Bernadette. Her father, Francois, worked at a mill. Her mother, Louise, washed clothes. Marie was one of nine children. The family was poor, and Bernadette was often sick. This is why experts believe that she grew to be only 4-feet, 7-inches tall. When she was young, she developed cholera. Later, she suffered from breathing problems that stuck with her for her whole life. Because of her poor health, she wasn't able to go to school. This made it difficult for her to learn to read and write. She had very little grasp of the French language. Instead, she spoke Occitan, which is a tongue native to the Pyrenees region where she grew up. Bernadette's family was very poor, and they had to live together in one underground room. Thanks to the generosity of a relative, they lived there rent-free. The area where they lived was once a jail cell. It was known as "the dungeon." Her parents worked very hard to support their family, but it was never enough. Although Bernadette's life was a struggle, she maintained a strong sense of faith. She was often made fun of for failing to memorize her religious studies, yet she didn't let it bother her. She would simply respond by saying that at least she would always know the love of God. This unfaltering faith never went unnoticed by the local clergymen. One priest, in particular, Abbe Arder, was taken with Bernadette. He had very limited contact with her but still called her a flower surrounded in divine perfume. When she was a teenager, it became apparent that she was special. She became famous for experiencing visions of the Virgin Mary. In February 1858, Bernadette was out collecting firewood with her sister and a friend. They were searching in a small cave known as the old rock. It was cold and wet outside, and Bernadette's sister and her friend wanted to cross the river. Bernadette wanted to find a dryer route. She decided that she would take off her shoes and socks to get through the water. When she was taking off her shoes, she heard a gust of wind. Next, she saw a figure appear in the dark cave. She said that the woman was bathed in a sparkling light. She had her arms stretched out and was carrying a rosary. When she prayed with the figure, it vanished. This was just one of a few incidents that occurred that led everyone to believe that she had seen the Virgin Mary. Bernadette was responsible for helping many people being healed of sickness thanks to the spring that she had found. Soon, as word spread, Bernadette received a lot of unwanted attention. To escape attention, she went to a Catholic convent in Nevers, France. Even though Bernadette got what she wanted and was hidden away, her problems weren't over. She was always sick, and when she was 35-years-old, she died of tuberculous. She fought a long, painful battle, but finally, the disease became too much for her. In 1909, 30-years after Bernadette died, experts wanted to dig up her body. They were hoping to find evidence that would explain her seeing visions of the Virgin Mary. They were very careful during the exhumation. They made sure to lift the stone off her tomb carefully before cracking open the coffin. What they found was incredible. When her body was exhumed, the experts were shocked that after being dead for over 30 years, she was still very well preserved. There were almost no signs of decomposition. It's been 140 years since this Catholic nun died, but her body is said to be mysteriously unchanged. According to Roman Catholicism, God allows for the remains of a religiously significant individual to avoid decomposition. If a corpse resists natural decay, it is known as incorrupt. The Catholics believe that this is an indicator that the person was a saint. When her body was exhumed, two physicians, Dr. David and Dr. Jourdan examined the body. They both swore that there was no smell, nor were there signs of visual decay. Both doctors agreed to the examination, saying that even her hair and fingernails were completely preserved. In 1919, the coffin was opened again. This time, there was still no odor, but her skin was a bit discolored. Experts believe that this was due to people touching it in 1909. In 1925, her coffin was exhumed one last time, and her body has been displayed in a glass coffin. Wax molds have been used to disguise the blackish color of her skin and the rest of her remains intact. It truly is a miracle. Like this content? Subscribe here: 🤍 Or, watch more videos here: 🤍
Born in Córdoba, Spain, in 1850. Together with her blood sister, she founded the Congregation of Slaves of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Dedicated to the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and the care of children, Santa Rafaela held the position of Mother Superior and her sister - co - founder of treasurer general. But, in the year 1893, the sister of Santa Rafaela shared with other councilors to the point of convincing them that her sister, Santa Rafaela Maria, because she was not capable of economics, could not continue to govern the congregation either. Faced with that consensus, she left the position and her sister took it and was superior for 10 years. In the 22 years of life that remained to this great servant of God, she lived in humility, doing the services that were given to her always with great love and obedience in the grace of God. Santa Rafaela Maria was a true adorer before the Blessed Sacrament. When she died in 1925, she departed for glory. Before long, the whole plot of her sister came to light, who was not recognized as a saint. - 🎶 Background music: Track: The Long Way Home by Scott Buckley Link: 🤍 - Let's get in touch! From the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles : - Our beloved foundress, Sr Wilhelmina (Lancaster) of the Most Holy Rosary, born in St. Louis Missouri, died May 29, 2019 at 95 years of age. - With the preparation of our St. Joseph altar uderway, and after much prayer, we decided the rightful place of our holy foundress was in the Church. This practice is very common in religious communities, even before their cause has been introduced. - Sister had been buried in the ground in a simple wooden coffin, without any embalming or vault, with a puddle of water at the bottom of the grave. - On April 28, the Feast of St Louis Marie DeMontfort the Sisters exhumed her. The top had caved in at the time of burial, so dirt had gotten in and lay over her remains - Not only was her body in a remarkable preserved condition, her crown and bouquet of flowers were dried in place, the profession candle with the ribbon, her crucifix, and rosary were all intact. Even more remarkable was the complete preservation of her holy habit, made from natural fibers, for which she fought so vigorously throughout her religious life. The synthetic veil was perfectly intact, while the lining of the coffin, made of very similar material, was completely deteriorated and gone. - The careful process of cleaning and removing the dirt and mold began, and the body began to lose volume since the initial exhumation with exposure to air. Thus some shrinking and darkening took place. All facial features were visible, but as falling dirt had caused damage, especially to the right eye, a Sister carefully crafted a wax mask to cover the face. - Sister is laid out here until the completion of the St. Joseph altar, now under construction, and due to be installed in our Church behind the high altar on May 29th, the anniversary of her death. Encased in glass, and behind a removable frontal, she can welcome her growing number of devotees. - Once the popular cultus is well established, her cause for sainthood may be introduced within the Diocese, so that Sister's holiness may eventually be recognized by Holy Mother Church. #SisterWilhelmina #Incorruptible #BenedictinesofMaryQueenofApostles #Missouri #Catholic #Benectines #TraditionalLatinMass #LatinMass #CatholicChurch #FSSP
