The programmable logic controller, or PLC, is a special purpose computer. It has no display, no keyboard, no printer, no hard drive, and hides in the control panel out on the factory floor, but it is still a computer. Initially, the PLC was a replacement for panels of relays, devices that turn on and off. Making a machine run using relays as logic was time-consuming and challenging, and making a change in the logic or the operation of the machine was almost as complicated as starting over. PLC Programming Tutorial for Beginners_ Part-2 🤍 In this lesson we will learn how to write a PLC program using an "S7 300” PLC and “STEP 7” software. We have two pumps which are being used to transfer two separate liquids into this tank.Inside the tank there are two level switches installed in the lower and upper parts of the tank respectively. There is also an electrically powered mixer inside the tank which starts working for a defined period of time, mixing the two liquids together after the tank has filled. We also have a discharge valve in the bottom of the tank which controls the draining of the liquid from the tank. When the level of the liquid drops to the level of the switch's position the contact closes, sending a 24 volt DC signal to the PLC input. We want to write the program so that when the level of the liquid reaches this minimum, the pumps will be activated and begin filling the tank with the liquids. The pumps continue filling the tank until the level reaches its maximum at the higher level switch. When this happens the open contacts in the switch will be closed and another 24-volt signal will be sent to the PLC input telling us that the tank is full. When this signal has been sent, first the pumps should shut down so that no more liquid enters the tank, and then this mixer should be turned on. We want the mixer to operate for seven seconds, mixing the liquids that have been pumped into the tank. After seven seconds the mixer should automatically shut down and this discharge valve should open. With the valve open the liquid will be discharged from the tank and transferred to another location within the factory to be processed. When the level of the liquid in the tank drops to the minimum set level of the lower switch, the switch contacts will close again thus starting a repeat of the cycle! ▶ C'mon over to 🤍 where you can learn PLC programming faster and easier than you ever thought possible! = ▶ Check out the full blog post over at 🤍 = In this video, we’re going to go back and have a look at the control panel, and try and figure out some of the connections by following a wiring diagram. As we’ve said before, this is a control panel that is used for a system that turns wastewater into clean water. It is a 2-door control panel on the front of which we have some switches that are connected to the PLC inputs and outputs. We are going to look at these switches and try and figure out the wiring behind them, as you may be curious as to how these switches are wired to the PLC! Let us first identify our push buttons; we have the Mute Buzzer push button, the ESD Reset push button and the Emergency Stop push button. Try to remember them, and see if we can find any of these items in the electrical drawings. All the wiring that you see in the panel is done based on the wiring diagram. This is what we draw using AutoCAD. Each page of this wiring diagram shows the exact wiring for different sections of this control panel. In the back of the Emergency Stop push button, you see that we have four wires, just as what we have on the wiring diagram. Two wires are tagged as 1 and two wires are tagged as 2. Based on the diagram, one of these wires with the tag 2 goes to the PLC digital input. It says the tag for the PLC input that the push button is connected to is 300U2.1. These are the tags for the PLC inputs and outputs.  One end of this diagram is connected to the push button and the other end is connected to the PLC input. So this is how easy it is to read the wiring diagram for a control panel. It goes exactly the same for the other switches that we have here as well. So to sum it all up, here is what you are going to learn after watching this video: – All the wiring that you see in the panel is done based on the wiring diagram. This is what we draw using AutoCAD Electrical. – Each page of the wiring diagram shows the exact wiring for different sections of the control panel. – Each of the wires in the wiring diagram has a tag number. In this video, we are going to talk about what controls large or small mechanical processes like an assembly line. That device is called a control panel. Think of a control panel like the human body. Inside our bodies, we have vital organs that control and monitor our surroundings. Similarly, a control panel is a metal box which contains important electrical devices that control and monitor a mechanical process electrically. Let’s get started! First let’s talk about the enclosure, the metal box that contains all of the electrical devices of the control panel. Enclosures are often aluminum or stainless steel and the size will vary based on the size of the process. A control panel enclosure can have multiple sections. Each section will have an access door. The size of the enclosure is commonly referred to by the number of doors the enclosure has. Each enclosure will have an electrical safety rating designated by UL, the “Underwriters Laboratories” who governs electrical safety. They will also have an IP rating or NEMA classification which designates the enclosure to be indoor or outdoor, waterproof or water-resistant, suitable for hazardous conditions, dustproof, or explosion proof. Now let’s go inside the enclosure and talk about the non-electrical components that make up the control panel. First, let’s talk about the back panel of the enclosure. The back panel is a sheet of metal that is mounted on the inside of the enclosure that allows us to drill mounting holes for different devices which leads us to our next component, DIN rails. A DIN rail is a metal rail with a standard width used for mounting electrical devices inside. The next component inside the control panel is wiring Duct. Ducts allow us to route the wires in an organized and efficient way while also reducing electrical noise between devices. Next, let’s get into the electrical components of the control panel! The main circuit breaker is where the power comes into the control panel for all of the devices. This circuit breaker generally has a disconnect on the outside of the panel that allows us to shut off the power. Always remember the topside of the circuit breaker will still have power. The power that comes into the panel can be anywhere from 480 volts to as low as 120 volts. After the power comes into the panel from the main circuit breaker the power will be run into a surge arrester. A surge arrester is a device that protects all of the electrical equipment inside the control panel from electrical surges or overvoltage. An electrical surge can come from a lightning strike or utility power surge. In this video, we talked about the components of a control panel. Each control panel will have the main power source coming in that is distributed throughout the panel to varying devices for control and monitoring. Control panels will come in different sizes but they all have similar devices that we talked about today. = Missed our most recent videos? What do we mean by analog input? Analog values are continuous values, such as temperatures and pressures. While we tend to think of them in digital terms, at some point we have to convert them from the continuous world into our digital world, and this is where analog inputs come in. Voltage signals in the range of plus or minus 20 volts or so and current signals in milliamps are commonly used as both analog inputs to PLCs. Salut à tous les amis, pour les plus anciens de LOAGRI, vous allez surement vous rappelez de Paul, PLC, j'avais fais une vidéo sur lui il y a quelques années. A 17 ans il fabrique ses machines agricoles, et bien de retour aujourd'hui chez Paul pour le semis de maïs en semis direct, avec un semoir bien évidemment modifié par ses soins ! On continuera la matinée avec la visite de son exploitation laitière, qui, depuis, à subie quelques améliorations. We will be using a Siemens digital input module 6ES7321-1BP00-0AA0. 🤍 A digital input module accepts inputs from digital devices such as switches and proximity sensors. The input module will detect one of the two possible conditions of an input device: open or closed. For example, a push-button switch is a digital device and can either be open or closed. If the switch is open, there is 0V at the module input terminal. If the switch is closed, there is +24V at the module input terminal. The input module will detect either a no-voltage or voltage condition at the input. These voltage conditions represent the open or closed conditions of the switch. These voltage or no-voltage conditions are represented by 1’s and 0’s in the PLC memory. Let’s talk about the current flow between the Power supply and the input module. There is a current flow, but it is very small and usually under 10 milliamps. Depending on the type of PLC input module and how it is connected with the input device, the current could flow in or out of the module. That’s where the terms Sinking and Sourcing come into the picture. When we talk about sinking and sourcing, it’s all about defining the direction of conventional current flow between two devices. – The current is flowing from Device #1 to Device #2. Therefore, we say Device #1 is Sourcing the current, and Device #2 is Sinking the current. – What if the current is flowing from Device #2 to Device #1? In this case, we say Device #2 is Sourcing the current, and Device #1 is Sinking the current. In every situation where you have a current flow between two devices, one of the devices will be Sourcing and the other will be Sinking. 1) Sinking PLC digital input modules PLC vendors manufacture both Sinking and Sourcing Digital Input Modules. Let’s have a look at two devices with current flowing between them. One device is a PLC input module, and the second device is a push-button switch. Based on the connection polarity, the Sinking module will have the current flowing into it from the switch. 2) Sourcing PLC digital input modules OK… let’s do that again, but this time our PLC input module will be a Sourcing module. Based on the connection polarity, the sourcing module will have the current flowing out of it. Current can flow in either direction through a push-button switch because it is a passive device and not polarity-dependent. There are many active digital input devices used in industry today that are polarity-dependent. They must be wired correctly or they will not work at all. These active devices will be labeled as either Sinking or Sourcing. 1) If the input device is a sourcing type, the PLC input module must be a sinking type. 2) If the input device is a sinking type, the PLC input module must be a sourcing type. We’re going to use 2 IEC 61131-3 languages and a higher-level language called C. The IEC 61131's five programming languages specified in the IEC 61131-3 Standard are Ladder Diagram, Instruction List, Function Block Diagram, Structured Text, and Sequential Function Chart. We are going to use Ladder Diagram and Function block in our exercise. Ladder Diagram was the first language developed for PLC programming. The simple explanation for why Ladder Diagram programming became so popular was that it closely resembled traditional “Relay Logic Diagrams”. Electricians and Engineers alike were familiar and comfortable with Relay Logic Diagrams and easily adapted to Ladder Diagrams. Early Ladder Diagram programming involved entering typical relay-type symbols onto a rung via hand-held programming devices connected to a PLC. It wasn’t long before computers and Graphical User Interfaces made this process much easier. This was all well and fine until more complex PLC hardware and I/O were developed and programming languages needed to advance thus spawning Function Block and other languages. Now we are at a point in history where there is an overlap between the activities of IT programmers and PLC programmers. More complex functions are not easily accomplished with traditional IEC 61131-3 languages and require higher-level languages such as C which is a familiar language in the world of IT programmers.  For example, C programs can be easily created to produce “logged data” to assist with “Predictive Maintenance” (PdM). A program of that complexity cannot be easily created using Ladder Diagram. We want an LED to turn on when two normally-open pushbutton switches are operated. - The ladder diagram has 2 open contacts operated by SW1 and SW2 on the Starterkit. Operating the “coil” output will turn on LED1 on the digital output module. Operating SW1 and SW2 switches will close normally open contacts, energize the coil and cause LED1 to turn on. - Basic blocks of FBD are based on “Logic Operators” such as AND, OR, and NOT. The FBD to solve our problem is built around an AND Function Block. - Eclipse IDE can be used as C Editor. Because C is not an IEC 61131-3 language, it is not a programming choice available in PLCnext Engineer. With a few simple tools, a C project created in Eclipse can be imported into a PLCnext Engineer project. Physically there's no difference in operation between any of the 3 programs we used to solve our problem. What programming language should you use? There’s really no single correct answer as there isn’t one best PLC programming language. It’s apparent that we wouldn’t use C to solve the simple problem presented in this exercise as Ladder Diagram or Function Block are easier and more appropriate. Digital output modules can be Solid State or dry Relay. The purpose of a PLC Digital Output module is to operate or control a DC voltage physical device based on field device conditions connected to an input module and decisions made by the PLC program. When we talk about sinking and sourcing, it’s all about defining the direction of conventional current flow between 2 devices. Think of it this way… Current is flowing between Device #1 and Device #2. Which direction is the current flowing? - The current is flowing from Device #1 to Device #2. Therefore we say Device #1 is Sourcing the current, and Device #2 is Sinking the current. - What if the current was flowing from Device #2 to Device #1? In this case, we say Device #2 is Sourcing the current, and Device #1 is Sinking the current. In every situation where you have a current flow between 2 devices, one of the devices will be Sourcing and the other will be Sinking. 1) Sinking output modules Let’s have a look at 2 devices with current flowing between them. One device is a PLC Output Module, and the 2nd device is a relay. Based on the connection polarity, the Sinking module will have the current flowing into it from the load. 2) Sourcing output modules Let’s do that again, but this time one of our devices will be a Sourcing module. Based on the connection polarity, the sourcing module will have the current flowing out of it and into the load. If you recall, earlier we said that when there are 2 devices with current flowing between them, one device will be sourcing and one will be sinking. Sometimes adding confusion to already murky concepts, some vendors refer to Sinking and Sourcing outputs as NPN and PNP outputs. - An NPN Module is a Sinking module - A PNP Module is a Sourcing module Why are the names PNP and NPN used? Whether it’s sinking or sourcing, an output module must act as a closed switch to complete the circuit. In many output modules the actual switching is performed by Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJTs): - In a Sinking module, the transistor is an NPN - In a Sourcing module, the transistor is a PNP The current flows into a sinking module and out of a sourcing module. If a PLC output module is listed as an NPN type, you can be sure that it is a Sinking type. But, if a PLC module is listed as a Sinking type, it may or may not be an NPN type. Many vendors use other solid state devices such as MOSFETs to perform the switching. For example, we have the following Sinking and Sourcing modules: 6ES7322-1BP50-0AA0 🤍 6ES7322-1BP00-0AA0 🤍 Unless we dig deeper, we can’t know for sure what type of switching device is used. The Siemens 6ES7322-1BF01-0AA0 (🤍 is an 8 output Transistor Output Module. This output module is a Sourcing module as the current flows out of the module and into the loads. If this module is incorrectly wired as a Sinking module, it will not operate. Steps towards learning Automation - 04 In this episode, we will understand what is PLC ladder programming PLC is a logic controller which has inputs and outputs to control a particular process. The relation between these inputs and outputs is established via a control logic. This control logic can be written using different programming languages. One of the most common and easier to understand language is the ladder programming. Check the video to know why the language is called ladder programming. This video further discusses what are NO (Normally Open) and NC (Normally Closed) contacts and how they can be used in control logic to achieve a specific task. These programming blocks are explained using animations and example. The logic for AND gate is developed using these contacts.
