Setup. Layout the board. Each player sets out their pieces so the pointed end faces towards their opponent. All pieces start with the black side up and are arranged in the following order: Pawns are placed across the 3rd row. On the second row, place the Bishop on the second space in from the left and the Rook on the second space in from the right. On the bottom row, going from left to right, the order is: Lance, Knight, Silver General, Gold General, King, Gold General, Silver General, Knight, Lance. The opposing King will have an extra mark differentiating it. Pick a player to go first, then turns alternate. On your turn, you must move 1 piece or drop 1 piece. The King can move 1 space in any direction. The Gold General can move 1 space in any direction except diagonally backwards. The Silver General can move one space diagonally in any direction or one space forward. The Knight can jump 1 space forward then 1 space diagonally forward. The Knight is the only piece allowed to jump over other pieces in its path. The Lance can move any number of free spaces forward. The Bishop can move any number of free spaces in any diagonal direction. The Rook can move any number of free spaces forward, backward, left, or right. A Pawn can only move 1 space forward. Each player has a promotion zone on the farthest third of the board, the 3 rows that their opponent’s pieces started on. If a piece moves into, out of, or within the promotion zone, the player may choose to promote the piece at the end of the turn. Promotion is indicated by turning the piece over after a move, showing its promoted value, typically the red side. The promoted Silver General, promoted Knight, promoted Lance, and the promoted Pawn can move as a Gold General, 1 space in any direction except diagonally backwards. The promoted Bishop can move any number of free spaces in any diagonal direction or 1 space forwards, backwards, left, or right. The promoted Rook can move any number of free spaces forward, backward, left, or right; or 1 space in any diagonal direction. If a piece reaches the far side of the board so that it would no longer have a legal move on future turns, it must be promoted. Pieces remain promoted until they are captured. Your pieces may not share a space with another piece but instead capture the first opponent’s piece they move into. Captured pieces are removed from the board and placed on the capturer’s side of the table in plain view of both players. On your turn, instead of moving a piece, you may choose to add 1 of the pieces you have captured onto any vacant space on the board. This is called dropping a piece. The piece is always dropped with its un-promoted value face up. You may not drop a Pawn onto a column which already contains one of your unpromoted Pawns, but you are allowed to if that Pawn was promoted. A Pawn may not be dropped to give immediate checkmate, however, other pieces may be dropped to give immediate checkmate. No piece may be dropped onto a space from which it will have no possible future moves. If you drop a piece on the promotion zone, your piece does not get promoted until it moves on a future turn. When your King is able to be captured during your opponent’s next turn it is called being in “check”. When your King is in check you must protect it and get it out of check. If it is impossible to save the King, then it is called checkmate. The first player to checkmate their opponent’s King, wins.

toco toco - Manao Kagawa, Pro Shogi Player TODAY'S GUEST Manao Kagawa, Pro Shogi Player 今回のゲスト 香川愛生、女流棋士 PLACES WE WENT TO Shirataki Gofukuten, Akatsuka Area Hatonomori Shrine, Sendagaya Area Japan Shogi Association Building, Sendagaya Area Jinro Room, Shibuya Area 訪れた場所 白瀧呉服店、 赤塚周辺 鳩森八幡神社、千駄ヶ谷周辺 将棋会館、千駄ヶ谷周辺 人狼ルーム、渋谷周辺 ◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇ In this episode, we spend the day with Manao Kagawa, a young shogi professional player. Shogi, that we can simply describe as Japanese chess, is a Japanese board strategy game that shares the same roots as chess. Kagawa started playing in 3rd grade and turned pro when she was still 15 years old. As it is a traditional game, players, especially professionals, wear a kimono when playing. Our first stop with Kagawa will be at Shirataki Gofukuten, a kimono shop that traditionally provides kimonos for shogi players since more than 150 years. It also organizes a yearly shogi tournament for women, where the winner is awarded with a kimono. We will then head towards the Sendagaya area to the Hatonomori shrine, which is a shrine dedicated to shogi. Many shogi players gather here at the start of each year for a traditional ceremony where they pray to the shogi gods. Close to the shrine lies the Shogi Kaikan, which are the headquarters of the Japan Shogi Association and the main practice center for most shogi players, including Kagawa. As a pro, she now plays on the upper floors of the building, where each of her game results is archived and contributes to her rank. Our last stop will be at the Jinro room in Shibuya, one of the rare spaces in Tokyo dedicated to the Werewolf game, one of Kagawa’s passions. She will tell us more about her vision about games and the importance they play in her life. ◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇ TOCO TOCO's previous episode: Katsura Hashino, Game Creator 🤍 TOCO TOCO's next episode: Yoko Taro, Game Creator 🤍 Manao Kagawa on Twitter: 🤍

If you're a fan of crazyhouse chess, you'll really love shogi. The OG chess game for dropping pieces and terrorizing your opponents can now be played at lishogi.org! It has a similar interface to lichess.org, and is super easy to navigate and find similar level opponents to test your chess calculation skills in a new setting! (Although, it's still in its "beta" stage of development, and sometimes it can be hard to find an opponent. If you're dying to play, feel free to check out 81dojo to find an opponent for sure!) Hope you guys will enjoy playing shogi as much as I have these past few days! #chesslifestyle #chessvsshogi #lishogi
An excellently designed Shog (Japanese Chess) set, to make the game easily accessible to international chess players. High quality pieces designed for immediate recognition take the foreign feel and language challenge out of the game, allowing players to immediately enjoy the complexities and subtleties of the game.
kid=62857 A great turn-around game in NHK-cup tournament. Habu wins a completely losing game. You can also find videos on youtube where you can actually see them playing! 🤍 🤍
Shogi, often referred to as "Japanese Chess", comes to us from the same era as Western Chess, but has an incredibly deeper strategic aspect, advanced promotions, and is ranked higher on BoardGameGeek. So why is it that we never really hear much about it? Shogi is complicated. Shogi is really hard. I'm also absolutely terrible at it. But that's just me. There's plenty of folks who are actually good. More to the point, though, Shogi has rules and concepts very similar to Western-style Chess; in the end you're trying to capture your opponent's king in checkmate, and individual pieces have specific movement rules, most of which will be recognizable to Chess players. There's a much deeper pool of strategic depth in Shogi, however. Between pieces being able to get promoted to more advanced versions to using your opponent's captured pieces against them. So why don't we hear much about Shogi in the board gaming community? It's ranked higher than chess in BGG's abstract games, is easy to get, and has been around since the same medieval era, but only has ~1/20th of the ratings. Is it the fact that so much of the world was conquered by England/Spain/Portugal, rather than Japan, so Chess as most people know it spread farther? Is it due to the relative difficulty of differentiating the pieces for non-native readers? Or something else? Let me know in the comments! If you'd like to give it a whirl, you can play some Shogi here: 🤍 🤍 🤍 Be sure to follow me on Twitter (🤍 and Twitch (🤍 for notifications of new videos and livestreaming games!
