Etiology for the swelling of the lower legs in an individual who is having a desk job or a long sitting hours or a long travel, which is very common and may not be related to a pathology, It may be a simple dependent edema, which we call in the medical language, which occur in long travel or long hours of sitting or lower limb or leg will get a lot of fluid accumulation by the end of the day or by rest or elevate your limb when you get up in the morning. The disappearance of the edema which itself shows it is a benign cause and it may not be related to any of the pathologies like kidney problem, less hemoglobin, less amount of protein in the body. All these things can be ruled out.

These bones are responsible for balance, and support of the body’s weight through many activities, such as walking, running, standing, and jumping. • Swollen ankles and swollen feet are common and usually not a cause for concern, particularly in cases of minor injury. • However, ankles and feet that stay swollen or are accompanied by other symptoms could be signs of a serious underlying health problem that requires prompt medical attention. CAUSES Here are some of the reasons why a person’s ankle and feet may appear swollen: • Trauma to the ankle or foot. The most common is a sprained ankle • Pregnancy. This swelling is due to increased pressure on the veins and fluid retention • Preeclampsia, a serious pregnancy complication in which high blood pressure and protein develop after the 20th week of pregnancy or immediately after birth. • Edema • Alcohol • Venous insufficiency, a condition in which blood inadequately moves up from the legs and feet up to the heart. • Infection. People with diabetic neuropathy and other nerve problem of the feet have an increased risk of infection affecting their feet • Blood clots • Lymphedema, a condition in which lymphatic fluid gathers in the tissues as a result of problems with the lymph vessels. • Heart disease or heart failure • Kidney disease • Liver disease such as cirrhosis • Lifestyle factors such as wearing ill-fitting shoes, having a sedentary life, walking or standing for long periods • Obesity • Certain medications including antidepressants, steroids, medications to help manage diabetes, birth control pills, calcium-channel blockers that help control blood pressure. • Nutritional deficiencies • Bone and tendon conditions • Hormonal imbalance Seek immediate medical attention if swollen ankle and feet is accompanied by chest pain, a pressure in the chest, shortness of breath, severe headache, upper abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting or fever SYMPTOMS Symptoms depend on the underlying causes and may range from: • Painless increase in foot and ankles size • Redness of skin around the swollen area • Warm skin around the swollen area • Ulceration with pus drainage • Achy legs It is of great importance not to ignore any type of swelling. The European Society of Cardiology in a 2015 report stated that one in five people will develop heart disease, but most don’t know that the first two symptoms of heart failure are swelling, starting at the feet and moving up through the ankles.

Swelling in the feet and ankles can be from a number of things. Often it is from an injury, but it can be an injury at your foot, ankle, knee, hip, or even back since the fluid or swelling will often follow gravity. More ankle stretches: 🤍 SUPPORT me on Patreon for as little as $1 a month, and get cool rewards: 🤍 If you have not had an injury to your feet and/or ankles, and you are having swelling, make sure you check in with your doctor because it could be a symptom of a more serious issue. Ankle pumps, calf stretches, and straight leg raises (SLR) are great ways to help reduce swelling in your feet and ankles. Working the calf, quads, and hip flexors work as natural pumps to move the fluid out of your legs. Also, propping your leg up above your heart and just relaxing can help reduce the swelling as well. Some seated exercises like seated hip flexion, seated long arc quads (LAQ), and heel and toe raises are great to do if you have to work at a desk all day. You can also do the heel raises standing for a tougher exercise. Swelling in legs is a very common symptom of pregnancy. When you become pregnant, you have extra amount of water in your body. From five liters of non-pregnant levels, the blood increases to about six and a half liters in pregnancy. . Because of gravity, the extra water goes in to your legs and it manifests as swelling.. At the end of the day, you can dip your feet in warm water and add a bit of salt to it. When you are sitting in office or at home, you can keep a stool or a dust bin in front of your leg, keep your leg up. At night you can keep a pillow beneath your ankles. . All this will help you put the water in your legs back in circulation so that the swelling will decrease.. The blood pressure monitoring is done every antenatal visit, if you blood pressure is not high, you need not get worried about your swelling in legs at all..

Yes swelling in the foot and redness does not mean gout alone. Gout is one of the cause. We have to try to rule out the cause one by one, if it is an infection, or is it stress fracture, or is it a gout. By and large when the patient comes with a history of no injury or no signs of infection, we take it as gout. Almost all swellings of the foot involving these things of no injury, no infection, then we take it as gout. For investigation, we may need an x-ray and the x-ray, may show uric acid crystal deposition. Sometimes it may not, but most of the times, you may see. You may need blood investigations, you may find uric acid increase. When these are the findings, we need to treat that gout and there are medications needed for gout and if required we may have to immobilize with a slab depending upon the severity of the pain and ice cold application.

This is definitely a problem nowadays because most of the people are sitting for a long duration in the office and they hardly get you and move around and that puts them at a risk of swelling in both their foot but make sure that the swelling which you have got is due to prolonged sitting and not due to anything else. There are other conditions like cardiac problems, renal problems and other problems in their systems which can lead to the swelling. So once you rule out these, then you can think that the swelling is due to prolonged posture. How to deal with that is you have to keep moving your foot up and down as well as moving you knee front and back as much as possible and the problem is with the static sitting how much this compresses the veins so that the blood that is accumulated in the veins cannot go to the heart. So the longer you sit the difficulty is for the blood to the heart. So the blood remains stagnant in the foot. So in the longer run, that puts you in the risk of developing even varicose veins. In order to prevent that is the future, it is recommended for these people that they keep moving their foot and the knee so that the contraction of the muscles will pump blood to the heart. Sitting for more than one hour is really not recommended. So they have to get up, move around, and sit and get up once and twice to pump the blood towards the heart. Thereby the stagnated blood cannot get swelling over there. As a daily protocol, you should have a habit of moving your ankle and the knee every now and then and getting up of a chair and moving around every one hour. So that will really reduce the risk of you developing a swelling over your foot.

Ankle swelling can come from many sources, the top being ankle arthritis, ankle sprains, gout, and circulation issues. Do you want to shrink the size of your legs? Hold on. What I meant was, do you have lymphedema or swelling on your legs? If you do, theb this video might be able to help you. Before we get started, please see your doctor and make sure that you’re diagnosed with lymphedema. This is because they are several types of swelling and they have different types of management. Lymphedema is a type of swelling caused by blockage In the lymphatic system. This can be because of lymph node removal or damage due to cancer or trauma. To check if there is progress, you can measure your legs using a tape measure. Then at the end of measure again Now that we understand what lymphedema is, let’s start managing that swelling. First let’s do deep breathing. This will stimulate the deeper lymphatic systems. Make sure that your belly expands when you inhale or Breathing in and you suck your belly and when you exhale. Let’s do 10 of those. Now let’s lay down. Put pillows under your legs to make your legs higher than your heart. It is essential that gravity will help in draining back the lymph back to our heart. You can do this before going to sleep or upon waking up. Now let’s do ankle pumps. Do this 10 times. Next exercise is leg clams. Bring your feet together then We open And close I knees 10 times. Now let’s do knees to chest. It might be easier to do one leg at a time. Bend your knee first and then slowly bring it up to your chest. Now let’s do pelvic bridging. This will help in contracting the muscles of backside of your legs. Let’s do this 10 times. No let’s set up. Now we’re going to do trunk twisters. Again this will stimulate the lymphatic system in our trunk. Let’s do 10 times. No let me show you how to do retrograde massage. This is a type of massage that works for lymph drainage. This will help you drain the lymph or the fluid back to your heart and ultimately out by Peeing it out. Take note the fluid needs to come out somehow and this is by going to peeing. You might have to go to the bathroom more. First massage the groin area. This is where there is good concentration lymph nodes. Massage going upwards. Do not starting from the feet but as close to the lymphatic nodes as possible. Then gradually go down. You don’t have to massage deep. Use your finger tips or the web formed by your thumb and the index finger. Just enough pressure to assist the lymphatic system. You might ask how long you need to do this. Just take your time. Don’t be in a hurry. Most people will say that this feels good. Now you need to get compression garments. You need to get your prescription from your doctor because it needs to be customized. You don’t want to compression stocking or garments to be very tight otherwise it will compromise the lymphatic system or compromise your heart condition if you have one.
